Unique Family Traditions
Apart from the standard holiday traditions, this is a space to share cool or unique traditions that we do with our families
so that we can add to each other's holiday tradition repertoires.
Christmas
"We buy 3-4 ornaments every year that are specific to major events through out the year i.e. pregnancy / new mommy ornament, first born ornament, graduation ornaments, school your child is attending ornament, etc..."
- MM Trudy
"We shop for Christmas gifts (in honor of our late daughter) and donate them to needy children (usually through our church). We wrap them nicely and reiterate the importance of giving, which is not always an easy concept for little ones. We also make reindeer food and cookies for Santa. And, on Christmas Day, we dress all the kids up in new, matching pajamas, open presents, and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus!"
- MM Shenia
"Each member of our family makes a gratitude list about things that year. I keep a Christmas album and I journal important things about the babies in it."
- MM Dina
"We each get a new ornament each year (like Trudy said, representing something that has gone on in our life that year). It's fun each year as we decorate the tree to relive each ornament for each year
(I have started to put the year on each ornament in sharpie because I forget). And we also try to buy an ornament each time we go on vacation somewhere as well."
- MM Sherrelle
" We each get a new pair of pajamas for Christmas Eve. I buy the pajamas and it would be great if it was a surprise for the family, but they are so picky, they "approve" the pj's beforehand, but they are not allowed to wear them until Christmas Eve. We look forward to putting on our new pj's and also we are sure to wake up looking cute every Christmas morning."
- MM Sherrelle
"I keep a "Christmas Memories" scrapbook and I bring it out around Christmas." -
MM Sherrelle
"My kids each get a stocking full of fun little gifts and they open them on the morning of Christmas Eve (it gives them something to do)."
- MM Sherrelle
"Some years (if I am really on it) they also get an advent calendar to help them count down the days. Last year I had a puzzle photo made (a great photo of them at Disney World) and each day they got a few pieces. It took them all month to figure out what the puzzle was."
- MM Sherrelle
"The weekend before Christmas we have a "family night" and we roast marshmallows and make s'mores in the fireplace, play games by the fire and watch a Christmas movie. The kids really love this and it makes me calm down in all the Christmas chaos."
- MM Sherrelle
"For those of you who celebrate with a big extended family, we used to do a talent show on Christmas Eve. It was very impromptu and usually the talent only had a few hours to practice together, but it was hilarious and tons of fun. An uncle videotaped the whole thing. At the end of the show all of the family gathered and we sang "Silent Night" (The Temptations version) as a group in front of the video camera and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Unfortunately my kids never got to experience that as my grandparents died and now the extended family doesn't get together for Christmas anymore."
